“His enthusiasm is infectious,” said Whitfield.
The Alexander High School senior takes four challenging classes this semester at the high school in the mornings — astronomy, Advanced Placement economics, Advanced Placement psychology and Advanced Placement calculus — before leaving for dual enrollment classes at Georgia Highlands College.
“I like to learn,” said Newborn. “I have always liked to learn new things.”
His 3.9 GPA has earned him a spot in the freshman class at the University of Georgia this fall, where he is pondering studies in business or agricultural architecture.
“I was really excited that I got into UGA,” Newborn said.
The son of Tommy and Dawn Newborn, he has lived in Douglas County his entire life. He has older twin sisters who graduated from Alexander in 2008.
Newborn is a member of Alexander’s Student Government Association and is senior class president.
He showed his musical side by performing in show choir this year, he added.
Academics aside, Newborn also excels in sports, having played on Alexander’s football team as safety and receiver.
Despite being new to the game, he played soccer his sophomore and junior years.
One of his greatest sports moments was playing goalie for the soccer team last year, he explained, when a game was tied. The teams were doing penalty kicks and he blocked the opponent’s shot to win the game.
“It was surreal,” he recalled.
Newborn also plays on a recreational lacrosse team and plans to continue the sport on a club team at UGA.
Despite academics, athletics and school leadership, Newborn somehow finds time for a part-time job at Johnny’s Pizza at Mirror Lake.
He also worked at a YMCA camp in Alabama during summers the past two years.
Perhaps the most important thing that led Whitfield to nominate him was his leadership and enthusiasm.
Whitfield noted that Newborn and some of his friends were instrumental in enhancing school spirit not only within the student body, but also within Alexander’s parents and staff.
“Last year, we had a really good basketball team, which was fun to watch,” he said. “We all really like sports and came up with a lot of creative chants, Cougar T-shirts and we stand up during the entire game. It is very interactive.”
“He always puts himself out there,” said Whitfield. “He always has a great attitude. He is willing and likes to try new things, even if it is uncomfortable.”
Newborn said he is always waiting for something more.
“I am ready to embrace what’s next.”
