Updating Dunwoody’s 30-page ethics ordinance touched off a debate which city Councilwoman Adrian Bonser said could go “till 3 a.m.” Monday at city hall.

The council meeting agenda included a “first read and discussion” of revisions to how the city’s ethics law treats complaints.

“There are so many things wrong with this,” Bonser said. “It’s bizarre. It’s subjective. It makes me angry.”

She objected to language she said was at odds with a previous agreement signed by Mayor Mike Davis and the city council.

Bonser offered changes to the due process section and the section dealing with violations.

“It’s not going to happen,” Davis said at 11:30 p.m., more than four hours after the meeting began.

The ordinance may have its second reading at the April 1 meeting, after which the city council has 60 days to vote on it.

In the meeting’s first hour, District 79 State Rep. Tom Taylor, R-Dunwoody, asked for financial support for an independent school system feasibility study.

City council members indicated they will approve its $50,000 cost at the April 1 meeting.

Taylor said replacement DeKalb County school board members have been narrowed to 60 applicants and will be reduced to 12 by Wednesday.

In other business, the city council also favored putting Public Works Director Michael Smith on the city payroll for a salary between $90,000 and $135,000.

Smith is now a contract employee with Lowe Engineers.

The formal vote will be at the April 1 meeting.
