The rate rose from 8.1 percent in December to 8.2 percent in January. The total number of employed residents was 68,065 in December, which decreased to 67,794 in January, said state labor analyst Corey Smith.
The number of unemployed residents went from 5,973 in December to 6,072 in January — an increase of 99, he said.
“Initial claims for jobless benefits in the county were up 232 over the month,” Smith said.
Claims for unemployment benefits filed in January were 719, a jump from 487 which were filed in December.
“Construction, manufacturing, retail trade and administrative and support services are industries that all endured large filings for unemployment insurance benefits over the month,” Smith said.
Once again, surrounding counties all saw an increase in unemployment rates. Rates included Bartow County at 9.3 percent; Carroll at 11.3 percent; Cobb at 7.8 percent; Douglas at 9.2 percent; Haralson at 9.6 percent and Polk at 8.9 percent.
Metro Atlanta had an increase in unemployment as well from 8.4 percent in December to 8.7 percent in January.
“Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January was 8.7 percent, unchanged from December,” according to a news release from the Georgia Department of Labor.
