Paulding County Commission last week voted to reduce the water pressure in the county’s northeast area, and proclaimed a day to honor a Winder child badly injured when the remnants of Hurricane Sandy blew through Georgia in October.

The county will be reducing the pressure, which is 120 to 200 pounds per square inch, by 60 to 70 pounds per square inch, said Water Systems Director Michael Carter.

“We are installing three valves on our system,” he said.

The reduction will take place in the area around the intersections of Graves Road at Harmony Grove Church Road, Bentwater Drive and Cedarcrest Road, Carter said.

Cost for the project will be $54,623, and was awarded to low bidder C&L Contractors.

By reducing the water pressure the county will be protecting its customers’ water lines, he said.

Also at the March 12 meeting the board proclaimed April 1 in honor of Tripp Halstead, 2, son of Stacy and Bill Halstead in Paulding County. Tripp was struck in the head by a falling limb Oct. 29, has undergone surgeries to relieve brain trauma and faces more surgeries plus rehabilitation.

The proclamation reads, “Therefore, I, David A. Austin, Chairman of the Paulding County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim the [first] day of April 2013 as ‘Tripp Halstead Day’ in Paulding County.”

Gail Benson Stegall of Dallas decided to help the Halstead family by asking Chick-fil-A to have a fundraiser for Tripp, Stegall said.

“It is what the Lord laid on my heart to do,” she said.

Stegall also called Austin and asked if the county could do anything, which led to the proclamation.

The Dallas and Hiram locations of Chick-fil-A will be hosting fundraisers April 1 from 5 to 8 p.m., in which they will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to Tripp, according to a news release for the event.

North Paulding Baptist Church members have pledged to volunteer their time to get the word out, Stegall said.

Before Stegall reached out to the Halsteads the family did not know anyone from Paulding County, Halstead said.

“It is inspiring to us,” he said.

Around 12 Chick-fil-A’s in the Atlanta area have hosted a fundraiser for Tripp, Halstead said.

The boy is doing better, Mrs. Halstead said. She described him as being at an infant stage, in which he is having to relearn basic skills following his brain injury.

Anyone who would like to donate can drop off a donation to either Chick-fil-A during the event. All checks should be made payable to Tripp Halstead.

“I want the people of Paulding County to come out and support this family,” Stegall said.
