But nothing like this.
Through 10 games this season the Lady Knights are 9-0-1, have knocked off some of the state’s elite programs and head into spring break at No. 3 in the Class AAAAAA Power Rankings according to Laxpower.com.
“It has been a fun start, but I can’t say it’s totally unexpected,” said Centennial lacrosse coach Angela Brunner, now in her fourth her as head coach. “We have a lot of great players, only lost two seniors from last year and came into the year really strong and motivated.
“We also have eight seniors that have been playing together since they were freshman, and those girls play with a lot of cohesion.”
Playing what their coach described as a very unselfish brand of lacrosse, Centennial’s season has featured a number of marquee victories and a few payback wins from their 2012 season — which ended with a 9-8 record and a second round exit from the state playoffs.
On March 12 Centennial ended a four-year losing streak to Roswell with a 12-10 win, the Lady Knights avenged 2012 losses to Holy Innocents’ and Johns Creek with dominating 15-1 and 19-1 victories, and their 12-12 tie against Walton on March 5 was a step in the right direction against a team that bounced them from the postseason last May.
“We’re led by talented players like our attacker Amy Martin and Lucy Barton our goalie, but the biggest thing is that we have girls that trust each other and connect well on the field. This group has played together so long and really knows how to work together.”
Martin, a senior, is the Lady Knights leading scorer with 48 goals scored; Katie Cardiello has added 18 of her own and 15 assists. Barton has anchored the defense from the goal with the help of senior defender Lindsay Atkins and Becca Davis (22 goals, 13 assists) and Emma Evers (21 goals, 10 assists) have brought versatility to the midfield.
Off for the next two weeks, Centennial will return to the field April 11 with hopes of continuing their stellar start.
“Our goal is to reach that state championship game,” said Brunner of her team. “It’s a special group and I really think we have the team and desire to do just that.”
