Several summer activities slated for nature center

Located in the city of Palmetto, the Cochran Mill Nature Center, 6300 Cochran Mill Road, has a slew of upcoming camps for children of all ages.

From camps centered on animals to learning about the environment, there is a camp suited to interests of every child.

The Neighbor has compiled a list of the camps below:

Camp Cricket

For rising kindergartners and first graders, Camp Cricket has a host of activities in store.

A total of four sessions underneath the Camp Cricket umbrella will be held, including ‘Things with Wings’ from June 10 to 14, ‘Planet Protectors’ from June 24 to 28, ‘Eco Explorers’ from July 8 to 12 and ‘Nature Rocks’ from July 22 to 26.

Price for campers is $85 per child for nature center members and $100 per child for non-members.

Each camp runs Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drop off time begins at 8:45 a.m. and pick up through 1:15 p.m.

Topics to be discussed at the varying sessions include topics such as bats, birds and bugs, visiting five different habitats and learning about fossils, rocks and minerals.

Registration fee, aside from including 20 hours of camp programming, includes a T-shirt.

Junior Naturalist

Children in the second through fifth-grade, have seven opportunities to explore thanks to the Junior Naturalist summer day camp.

Registration is $125 each week for members and $150 each week for non-members.

Camp sessions include June 3 to 7, June 10 to 14, June 17 to 21 and June 24 to 28; July 7 to 11, July 14 to 18, July 21 to 25 and July 28 to Aug. 1.

Each session runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Themes for the varying season run the full gamut of learning about vertebrae and invertebrates, the difference between living and non-living things, the properties of water, weird plant species and habits across the globe.

Registration fee also includes a T-shirt.

Destination adventure

Teens wanting to take a dip into an adventure of a lifetime now have Cochran Mill Nature Center’s adventure camp.

The camp, scheduled for June 17 to 21, is for sixth through ninth-graders.

The cost is $270 for members and $300 for non-members.

Activities for the adventure camp will include hiking, canoeing, climbing and studying wildlife.

On Thursday night of the camp, teens will participate in a campfire, cookout and night hike.

Registration fee also includes travel opportunities, camp overnight, workshops and a T-shirt.
