Mayor Mike Bodker discussed economic development during the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce’s monthly lunch series last week.

Supporting economic development is a must for the city’s continued growth, he explained.

“Essentially if we don’t support economic development, our city will be in trouble,” he said.

Bodker encouraged chamber members and guests to invest in Johns Creek Advantage, a new organization designed to accelerate strategic economic growth in the city.

“I recognize how [Johns Creek Advantage] can change the trajectory of our revenue by bringing in more taxpayers,” he said.

He added, “Through Johns Creek Advantage, we have the opportunity to be number one in selling our own community.”

An initiative of the organization is to encourage current businesses in the city to expand and businesses outside the city to relocate to Johns Creek. Bodker announced last year the city issued 351 business licenses.

If the organization attracts more commercial businesses to the city, the tax base will become more diversified. Currently 79 percent of the city’s taxes come from homeowners and only 21 percent come from commercial businesses, Bodker said.

“The ideal mix would be 50/50,” he said. “We’re never going to be in the ideal mix, but my mission has been since the day we started this city to move that needle a little bit at a time.”

Doing so would reduce the burden on homeowners’ wallets, he explained.
