Since the Georgia Olympics last year, Westlake junior high jumper Joseph Woodbury has been on a mission to make sure history does not repeat itself.

After an 11th place finish in the high jump at the state finals in Class AAAAA, Woodbury has finished first in each of his first five competitions this season.

“My goal this year was not to let what happened at state last year happen again,” Woodbury said. “I felt like I should have placed higher than that because going into state I had the No. 3 spot but my head wasn’t there and neither were my steps.”

“He is a little more focused this year especially on the little things” Westlake track coach Louise Bryant said. “He understands that those things are making changes in his height.”

As a result of his newfound approach, Woodbury is now ranked No. 2 in the state, thanks to a 6-foot-8 jump, a personal record, at the Lions Chick-Fil-A Showcase Feb. 19.

“One thing that makes Joseph a great high jumper is that he is very flexible,” Bryant said.

This past Saturday, Woodbury tied his personal record once more. He also has a 3.5 GPA and an interest in anesthesiology.
