The springtime tradition of Atlanta Steeplechase returns to Kingston Downs Saturday.

The 48th annual Steeplechase features activities and attractions that will be a draw for the entire family.

Guests from around the metro Atlanta area, and even outside the state, will converge upon Bartow County in what has been called Georgia’s largest lawn party.

“It’s diverse and it’s fun,” said Gene Vance, board member for the Atlanta Steeplechase and Bartow County resident. “It’s a great family event, the entertainment starts at 9 a.m. and children under 12 are free.”

Atlanta Steeplechase is anchored by thrilling horse races — Thoroughbred racing, with four races over brush jumps and one turf race — featuring the top steeplechasers in the country who compete for a share of an $80,000 purse.

All races are sanctioned by The National Steeplechase Association.

Additional activities include terrier races, pony rides, and live music in the Bartow Village.

The Atlanta Steeplechase is a picnicking and tailgating event so pack your coolers and blankets.

New to Steeplechase this year are a raffle for a year lease on a Hyundai Equus from Terry Reid Hyundai, the People Chase 5K race and the new infield hat parade.

Vance said last year’s event’s attendance was helped by a generous Mother Nature and organizers are looking for the same this year in light of a great forecast.

Proceeds from Atlanta Steeplechase benefit the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are scheduled to make appearances.

The “Gentle Giants” will be seen during the pre-race festivities beginning at 9 a.m.

The appearance is made possible by Eagle Rock Distributing Company.

“We are thrilled to continue our 15 year partnership with Eagle Rock,.” said Jean Bird, Atlanta Steeplechase executive director.

“Their sponsorship is integral to the success of our event and we are proud to be associated with such an incredible company.”

General admission tickets are $30 and may be purchased through Ticketmaster.
