Before Woodward Academy’s Zack Wingate and Drew Mancuso stole the show against Westminster, Richard Jackson was one of the stars.

In his first game back since spraining the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, Jackson pitched four scoreless innings and struck out eight batters, while allowing just three hits and a walk in last Saturday’s 7-6 home win over the Wildcats.

“I was locating my sinker and they were guessing fastball but then I hit them with the curveball,” Jackson said.

With runners on second and third in the first inning, the right hander struck out the final two batters. His next time on the mound, Jackson struck out all three batters looking.

In the third, he struck out one hitter, and in the fourth, he struck out one batter swinging and his final opponent looking.

“He’s had some elbow trouble,” Woodward coach Jim Minor said. “We weren’t going to let him throw more than 50 pitches but Jackson looked great today.”

This season, Jackson feels like he is a better pitcher because he relaxes and pitches instead of trying to overpower hitters like in the past. He also has a 3.1 grade-point average and hopes to pitch at Tennessee.
