Banneker sophomore Ryan Clark has already proven he is one of the best runners in the state in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes.

If he can prove it to the rest of the nation in Illinois at the end of June, then he will earn a spot on Team USA and compete in the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine in July.

“Anytime you have a kid who can represent not only his family, his community and his school but his country is outstanding,” Banneker track and field coach Juval Winston said.

But before really focusing on this goal, Clark wants to solidify his No. 1 ranking in the 100, 200 and 400 with a state championship in one event or all. Last season, he finished second in the 400 and fifth in the 200 at the Georgia Olympics.

To prove his level of motivation, Clark has currently earned a first-place finish at every outdoor event in the state.

“I always go hard at practice,” he said. “I never take a light day. I just try my best everyday.”

“Ryan is definitely one of those special kids who only comes around every so often,” Winston said.

Clark also has a 4.0 GPA and runs without his glasses. His dream is to run in the Olympics one day.
