The Drake House in Roswell has canceled their annual Drake Walk set for Saturday. So far, there is no rescheduled date for the event.

Walk, run or stroll one-mile or five-kilometer routes through historic Roswell on May 4 — all for a good cause.

The Drake House, a crisis residential assessment center for homeless women and children in North Fulton, will hold its fourth annual Drake Walk from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting from the Roswell United Methodist Church.

The walk raises money to support the center’s program, including a variety of life skills workshops for residents, said Karen Pye, development director at the center. The event also helps cover maintenance costs for the center’s 15 apartments where the residents live, she said.

The Drake Walk raised about $35,000 last year.

“We’re hoping to raise more [this year],” Pye said.

She anticipates about 500 participants for the walk.

The event incorporates the local business community as walkers are encouraged to stop into sponsoring Roswell businesses along the route to pick up stickers that will make them eligible for raffle tickets at the end of the walk.

“[The founders of the walk] wanted to do something that’s fun for the family and also supports local businesses,” Pye said.

She said the center has received much community support over the years.

The Drake Walk also includes a festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where the walkers, runners and other community members can enjoy food, drinks, activities and entertainment. It is a great opportunity to get out with the family and enjoy the day in historic Roswell, Pye said.
