Throwing the shot put and discus is equally enjoyable for Woodward Academy senior Jameel Spencer and he has the proper distances to back it up.

“I really don’t have a favorite between the two,” Spencer said. “It really depends on the day. The shot is more power. The discus is more finesse and more skill. But it really depends on the weather and temperament I’m in.”

Whether it was chilly or warm and if Spencer was in a joking or serious mood, his focus was always shifted towards finishing with one of the best throws in the discus and shot put. Before a second-place finish in both events at the Region 6-AAA Track and Field Championship, Spencer finished first four times in both events on the same day.

“He is more confident in himself,” Woodward coach Scott Crook said. “He is more explosive. He’s bigger and stronger. He’s also very knowledgeable about the fundamentals of the throws. When something is not exactly right he has an idea about how to correct it.”

This Saturday, Spencer will compete at the Class AAA Sectionals, and depending on favorable results, Spencer will move on to the Georgia Olympics, beginning May 2.

“I’m just trying to go out with a bang and have as much fun as possible,” said Spencer, who will play football at Georgia State this fall.
