But with the Class A-AAAAA playoffs still two weeks away, BT head Coach John Wellford has his Titans focused on the present and working hard to take the Titans’ program to the next level.
“We want to turn this program into a perennial contender for the state championship, and we believe we are taking the necessary steps to do so,” said Wellford, whose team entered the week with an 11-2 record overall and ranked No. 7 in the state according to LaxPower.com.
“Obviously you want to be playing your best in the playoffs, but the playoffs are still a ways off. [However] we are beginning to play as a team and I think we still have yet to play our best lacrosse.”
BT’s best lacrosse so far has them a perfect 8-0 in area 3A-AAAAA play, placing them in a tie for first place with Northview whom they played last night in a de facto area championship game — results were not available at press time.
Sparked by the play of team leaders Tony Scordino (captain, defense), Matt Kamph (attack), Zander Georgacopoulos (goalie) and junior Tom Nofi (attack), the Titans have been nothing short of dominant during their current nine game winning-streak — allowing just over three goals per game while averaging over 16.5 per contest.
“Up until now over half our goals have been assisted and we are getting two ground balls for every one the opponent gets,” said Wellford of his team’s strong play over the last month. “Our team is uncut and everything we need is there; we just need a little grinding and polishing to shape up and to hone the team.”
“Grinding,” as Wellford called it, will revolve around playing their best against some of the state’s top competition, something he noted that they did well in a 12-10 victory against state-ranked Allatoona (12-3 overall) earlier this month.
“We got a good dose of [tough competition] at Allatoona and the boys really enjoyed it,” said Wellford of the Titans 12-10 win over the Buccaneers on April 16.
The grind will continue through the next two weeks as the Titans wrap up their regular season schedule against a host of playoff caliber programs.
BT will host Wesleyan on Friday in their area finale before taking on No. 10 ranked Starr’s Mill (April 30) and No. 9 ranked McIntosh (May 3) next week.
