In a news release, the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections Tuesday announced its top three finalists for the position of director of the Fulton County Department of Registration and Elections, following a national search which began in October.

The three finalists are: Sidney Browning, Leonard Piazza and Richard Barron. The board’s top finalist is Barron, who currently serves as elections administrator for William-son County, Texas, where he has supervised 30 election cycles.

He has served in various capacities in the public and private sector with elections-related services since 1999. In his current position, Barron has supervised numerous aspects of elections including early voting, voter registration, absentee voting and implementation of electronic voting systems. He holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Oregon and a master of arts degree from Antioch University, as well as several professional certificates.

Barron will be considered for appointment at the May 15 Fulton Board of Commis-sioners meeting. His hiring must be confirmed by the commissioners’ vote.

The previous director, Sam Westmoreland, resigned in September after being arrested for driving under the influence. His second-in-command, Sharon Mitchell, has served as interim director since then.
