Friends of Disabled Adults and Children will welcome Snellville native Aimee Copeland, who battled a flesh-eating bacterial infection last year, as the guest speaker and host of this year’s annual Run, Walk ‘n Roll event.

The event will be Saturday at Stone Mountain Park. It is a five-mile race or two-mile walk through Stone Mountain Park. Participants can run, walk or roll the course in wheelchairs, strollers and walkers.

Run, Walk ‘n Roll is the organization’s main fundraiser, bringing in $30,000 last year, which went toward a program that distributes items such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers or other medical equipment. Participants and attendees are encouraged to bring medical equipment as well as monetary donations to the race.

Copeland’s infection resulted in the loss of her leg, foot and hand, leaving her disabled after a day that was meant to be fun in the water with friends. Five of her major organs failed as well.

She was playing on a homemade zip line when it malfunctioned and she fell into the water, setting the stage for her development of necrotizing fasciitis. She now promotes the challenges and needs of the disabled.

“FODAC’s mission is one that is obviously close to my heart,” Copeland said. “They provided me a special sport chair while I was waiting for a new one.” Copeland’s mission is to help those in need regain mobility and a sense of independence and dignity, she said. She describes herself as a free spirit and a flower child born a generation late. Copeland graduated from the University of Georgia and then began graduate school at the University of West Georgia where she was studying humanistic psychology. Registration is at 7 a.m. and the run is at 8 a.m. The walk/roll is at 9 a.m. Park admission is $10.
