Several athletes from the Lithia Springs track and field team performed well at the Region 5-AAAAA Championship and were able to advance to sectionals April 27 at New Manchester to compete for a chance at state.

Among these athletes was senior Avonte Boyd who qualified in three events — long jump, 200-meter dash and the 4x100 relay. Boyd then advanced to the state Class AAAAA meet in the long jump.

Boyd has run track and played football for Lithia Springs since he was a freshman.

“This year, with the talk of college recruiters and his imminent graduation, he has stepped up his game, which has allowed him to make it to the next level,” said head coach Phillip Fowler.

At the region meet Boyd ran his personal best in the 200 with a time of 22.50 seconds. He ran his personal best of 11.14 in the 100 that day as well.

Most notably for Boyd that day was placing first in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 2 inches. However, his personal best of 21 feet 10.5 inches was achieved at the Marietta Friday Night Lights Invite on April 5.

Being a member of the 4x100 team, Boyd helped the team set a new school record of 42.42 seconds at the region meet, placing second.

Fowler said Boyd currently has three football scholarships on the table and if given the opportunity, he will run track at the school of his choice as well.

“He is an all-around good kid, great athlete and fierce competitor. I expect him to do well wherever he winds up,” Fowler said.
