It can be said Eliot Zerden got a jump on his competition at the GISA Region 1AAA track and field championships.

The Weber senior swept the jumping events at the meet, which was held Mill Springs Academy in Alpharetta April 22.

Zerden won the long jump at 19 feet, 8½ inches as well as the triple jump (40-7) and high jump (5-6) to lead the Rams to a runner-up finish in the 1AAA boys’ team standings.

“Eliot’s preparation for the region championship was stellar and his mindset was that of a champion,” Weber coach Kristan Moses said. “He went into the meet very relaxed and approached each event one at a time. He has been a great captain and performer all season long.”

Zerden has been among the top jumpers in the state in GISA Class AAA the last few years. He finished seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump at the state meet last year and sixth in the triple jump and seventh in the high jump at state in 2011.

He was also a key member of the Weber boys’ basketball team.
