East Paulding finished its 2012 football season with an 11-1 record. Several Raiders signed on National Signing Day in February, but Demetrius James II took his time and finally made his decision.

After playing football for East Paulding for four years, James signed a scholarship to NCAA Division II Benedict College, a private institution in Columbia, S.C., where he will play for head coach James Woody in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

“It was the best opportunity for me and my family. It has a family atmosphere and it’s a [historically black college] so I felt at home,” said James.

James also was considering Georgia State University, Jacksonville State University and Pointe University.

Playing inside linebacker for the Raiders, James collected 85 tackles, 34 assists, two fumble recoveries and one interception as a senior.

“He’s a typical East Paulding football player; hard nose, tough, aggressive player,” said head coach Chuck Goddard.

James said he and the coaches have agreed that he will play as a freshman.

In all his years of Raiders football, James said his most memorable moment was going undefeated his senior year and beating Allatoona, 25-7, to win the region championship.

Earning a 3.5 GPA, James is a member of the National Honor Society and a 2012 member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

“He’s a good kid who works hard. He will play football, but most importantly he will graduate from college with a degree,” said Goddard.
