With two state titles already in hand, Union Grove senior wrestler Griffin Higginbotham added another accolade to his name when he received the Trevor Bailey Scholarship from the South Metro Takedown Club on May 8 at Compound Wrestling.

“I’ve worked hard throughout my high school career and at the South Metro tournament so it was really just a pleasure and honor to get it,” said Higginbotham, who won the South Metro tourney the past three years.

During his tenure at Union Grove, Higginbotham earned more than 200 wins grappling on the mat, including the 126-pound Class AAAAA state title this season.

“I made the best of my time wrestling at Union Grove,” Higginbotham said. “I hope the program continues to do well.”

Now with graduation right around the corner, Higginbotham, who also has a 4.0 GPA, is ready to prepare himself for wrestling at Cornell as a freshman.

“It’s an Ivy League school so I know I will get a good education and their wrestling team is great so I know that is my best chance of becoming an All-American in college too,” said Higginbotham, who plans to major in engineering.

Higginbotham said he will be training at the Compound three to four times each week this summer.
