The race, presented by the Brookhaven Dental Associates, will be at Village Place Brookhaven, 1430 Dresden Drive, Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will go to the elementary school. Last year’s race brought out about 1,300 runners, and the goal is to gather 2,000 more, according to the bolt’s website.
The course, called “fair but challenging” by previous runners, winds through the Ashford Park neighborhood.
Ever since the Brookhaven Dental Associates began the race, all proceeds have gone to the elementary school, according to Principal LaShawn McMillan.
“It’s a huge fundraiser for our school,” she said. “We’re so thankful that a group of men who live in the neighborhood wanted to give back to the neighborhood school.”
This year, Ashford Park, which has about 550 students, will be able to use the proceeds from the race to make technology improvements, buy supplies for teachers and fund after-school tutorials for students who need extra help in math.
Proceeds from previous years have allowed Ashford Park staff members to put SmartBoards in all the classrooms, McMillan said.
She added the elementary school has its own runners club and those members will help to set up for the race and stuff bags for participants. Several teachers will participate in the race, as well.
“There are many things we wouldn’t be able to do without the effort of the coordinators pulling together to support our school,” McMillan said. “The neighborhood really gets behind it. There are a lot of runners.”
Interested runners or walkers can pick up informational packets Friday at Big Peach Running Co., 705 Town Blvd., from 4 to 8 p.m. Online registration is $30 until 9 p.m. tonight at www.brookhavenbolt.com, or $35 on race day.
Strollers or walkers are allowed and encouraged, and those participants will begin the race five minutes after the runners to ensure safety.
