A dark, quiet theater is not the only setting to spend time with family or friends enjoying a good movie.

Friendship Community Park in Milton, Newtown Park in Johns Creek, Wills Park in Alpharetta, and Riverside Park and Roswell Area Park in Roswell will all host outdoor movie nights this spring and summer.

Catch “Wreck It Ralph” Saturday at Riverside Park, part of Roswell’s free outdoor movie series. A “dive-in” movie night is scheduled June 25 at the Roswell Area Park pool for a viewing of “Ice Age: Continental Drift.”

“The kids just float on their floaties and watch the movie,” said Katie Troline, superintendent of recreation for the city of Roswell. “It’s really fun.”

There will be a pool admission fee for those who do not have pool passes. The city’s film series will move back to Riverside Park the following month for a screening of “Rise of the Guardians” on July 20. Dates and movie selections for August and September have yet to be announced.

The city of Alpharetta is also hosting a special “dive-in” movie event showing “Parental Guidance” at the city pool at Wills Park on Aug. 2. Anna Virgo, with the city’s parks and recreation department, said parts of the movie were filmed in Alpharetta. Pool admission is $3, but those who are 2013 pool passholders get in free.

The city of Milton will take on a different approach to cool down as part of its free summer event series. Friendship Community Park will turn into a winter wonderland July 13 as residents and visitors are invited to go snow tubing in the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“[The city] didn’t want to basically just do something that another city’s doing. So we thought Christmas in July — that would be perfect,” said Angela Thompson, the city’s special events and projects manager.

Milton’s “Family, Fun, Flicks and Flurries” series also features screenings of “The Goonies” on June 8 and “The Sandlot” on Aug. 24, both at Friendship Community Park.

The “Movies in Newtown Park” series is another opportunity for a free evening of fun for all ages. A huge inflatable screen will be erected for family-friendly movies on June 8, July 13 and August 24.

Kirk Franz, Johns Creek’s recreation and parks manager, said they will likely show “Parental Guidance” during one of the three events.

“The baseball scene was filmed at Ocee Park,” he said.

As with the other local movie nights, attendees can take advantage of pre-show activities before the shows start at dusk.
