The Johns Creek Business Association will host the third annual Greg Whitaker Memorial Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament, which benefits the Johns Creek Public Safety Foundation.
“Johns Creek’s got a great deal of golf outings,” said Wayne Carrel, with the Johns Creek Business Association. “There’s more than enough tournaments to play golf, but there’s a select few tournaments that your money’s going for a good cause — a very good cause.”
The money raised from the Guns and Hoses Golf Tournament will go to benefit police officers and firefighters in times of crisis.
“There are times when a fireman or policeman — man or woman — gets injured, sometimes they’re not ones to go out there … and ask for help or inquire for help for their families, even just to pay bills if that were the case, and these are the people we rely on when we’re in our most dire need,” Carrel said.
Though he does not have a specific fundraising goal in mind for the upcoming event, Carrel anticipates participation to almost double from last year’s event.
“Last year’s tournament we had, I think, 17 foursomes and we’re looking at 32 this year so that’s a huge increase,” he said.
He hopes the tournament continues to grow and will be one of the largest annual fundraisers in the city.
“We’re just looking to the city, its residents [and] its businesses to do all they can to be involved,” Carrel said.
The Johns Creek Business Association is still looking for players and sponsors for the tournament. Registration fees are $600 for a four-player team, $150 per player or $90 for participants who are fire or police personnel. Sponsorships start at $100.
A silent auction and dinner reception are also part of the tournament fundraiser.

Clarification: In an article published in the May 22 edition about the Greg Whitaker Memorial Guns & Hoses Golf Tournament, the family of Sgt. Greg Whitaker, the tournament’s namesake, would like to clarify that Sgt. Whitaker’s family did not need the funds for his burial expenses and that Sgt. Whitaker did not leave his family in financial need, as stated in the article. Funds from the inaugural tournament in 2011 are for the needs of his two children.
