Georgia Shakespeare, a theater program on Oglethorpe University’s campus, is hosting Camp Shakespeare this summer.

The camp will be July 8 through 19, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., or July 22 through Aug. 2, with the same hours. Session 1 will focus on “As You Like It” and “Twelfth,” while the second session includes “Julius Caesar” and “Hamlet.”

Camp Shakespeare is a new initiative for this summer, according to Allen O’Reilly, Georgia Shakespeare education director.

Although the group has had the camp before, previous sessions were split into age groups whereas this summer’s camps both include ages 7 to 12. It is also new for the group to focus on different plays each session, he said.

The first few days of the camp are reserved for games, activities and exercises. One of the crowd favorite games is hashing out Shakespearean insults, O’Reilly said.

“They do it while they get their Shakespearean text into their mouths,” he said.

Starting on day three or four, the campers will get their scene assignments and lines. A casual audition process determines which scenes will go to each performer, O’Reilly said, but even after the parts are cast, each morning starts off with Shakespearean games. Some directors show filmstrips with excerpts of professional actors in the same play so the students become familiar with the plays and with the way professionals play their parts.

Participants will learn acting exercises, improvisation, scene work, theater games and stage combat. The final days of both sessions end with performances for family and friends.

The camps have room for about 20 students, and the first session, which features comedies, is filling up fast. Georgia Shakespeare employees are trying to recruit more campers for the second session, which is more drama-based.

Directors this year include associate artists of Georgia Shakespeare.

Campers do not need prior acting experience.

The camp is $500 per person. Campers may register through the Georgia Shakespeare website at or by calling (404) 504-3401.
