The Dynamos are a part of Union City’s 65 and up women’s softball league. Since the first week in April, 16 team members have been practicing Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Ronald Bridges Park when the weather permits.
“They aggravate me every Tuesday and Thursday morning about practice and they don’t miss a beat,” Dynamos coach Lee Blitch said. “They come and practice. It’s a blessing to have these ladies who can do that.”
Blitch, who is the Union City parks and recreation manager, is very pleased he and Melletta Clayton, the recreation coordinator, decided to construct a team.
“We didn’t think it would happen but 10 women showed up for first practice and from there we grew,” Blitch said.
He believes the same thing could happen in other cities and counties if the idea was put forth.
“I was surprised and I’m sure anybody else would be surprised to see the interest,” Blitch said.
A few members of the team are Annie Horton, Zelma Ridley, Dorothy Smith, Naomi Beasley, Robbie Broussard and Cooky Borah, and assistant coaches Shirley Meadows and Andrea Thomas.
“It may take them a long time to get around the bases and all but just the mere fact that they are out there trying to play—I love it,” Blitch said.
“It is just something that makes me feel good and encourages me and other people to stay healthy,” he said. “It’s unbelievable and they love it.”
This past Friday, the Dynamos opened their season against the Silver Foxes of Clayton County at Rum Creek Park in Jonesboro. Smith had an impressive performance but the Dynamos lost the five-inning game 9-6.
“They were tired,” Blitch said. “We couldn’t have got another inning out of them if we wanted to.”
The Dynamos will get their chance at redemption tomorrow when the Silver Foxes come to Ronald Bridges Park.
“There was a good crowd,” Blitch said. “I was pleasantly surprised.”
After the rematch with the Silver Foxes, Blitch expects the Dynamos to have another opponent scheduled. He is hoping the team will play at least six games this season.
Blitch is still looking for opponents for his team to compete against. His contact information can be found at unioncityga.org.
