Due to inclement weather Nash Farm Battlefield will reschedule its event to another date yet to be determined.

Both tribute to the country and fundraiser for Henry County Special Olympics, the third annual Firecracker 5K and 10K road race is being presented by Henry County Parks and Recreation.

Terry Nash, the department’s therapeutic coordinator, said the event is crucial because it is the fundraising arm for the county’s athletic program for developmentally disabled residents.

“We hold the fundraiser each year to benefit our 150 athletes and unified partners that participate in our Special Olympics program,” she said. “Monies from this event will help fund six state competitions per year which funds registration fees, transportation costs, uniforms and meals.”

The county’s team participates in a vast array of sports, including softball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, bocce, sailing, equestrian, aquatics, soccer, kayaking, bowling and long distance running.

Nash said they are still seeking sponsors for the event.

The road race will be held at Nash Farms, no relation to Ms. Nash. The address is 100 Babbs Mill Road in Hampton.

Pre-registration is $20 for the 5K and $25 for the 10K.

Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. on race day.

Following are other Fourth of July events happening throughout the county:

Henry County's annual fireworks extravaganza at Nash Farms scheduled for July 4 at 9:30 p.m. has been rescheduled due to inclement weather. A new date will be announced soon.

Ice cream social

The city of McDonough will host its seventh annual ice cream social on July 4 at First Baptist Church of McDonough's fellowship hall, 101 Macon Street, due to forecasted inclement weather. Free scoops of ice cream — vanilla and chocolate — will be given out to patrons while supplies last. Following the ice cream social, a short program will feature patriotic song performances. The program will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

Thursday Thunder

For Fourth of July Fun, Atlanta Motor Speedway will host its weekly dose of Thursday Thunder, complete with fireworks. An autograph of drivers will also be included in the festivities.

Get local produce, products and mingle with fellow community members at McDonough’s Courthouse Square Market, to be held on July 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The market, held inside the Chafin Building on Griffin Street, will feature items for sale such as coffee, fresh honey, dog treats, candles and more.
