In a news release, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp Thursday reminded the licensed professionals in the state certain licenses expire Sunday. The licenses up for renewal include: athlete agents, registered architects and funeral establishments and crematories. There are also numerous licenses up for renewal under the cosmetology board, barber board, pharmacy board and private detectives and security guard board. All licenses under the water and wastewater treatment plant operators’ board are also up for renewal.

Kemp strongly advised all licensed professionals to review their license if they are under one of the boards or license types listed above to see if their license is up for renewal to ensure their license does not lapse.

He also reminded licensed professionals that as of Jan. 1, 2012, Georgia law requires all those applying for renewal of an existing license to submit secure and verifiable documentation of U.S. citizenship/qualified alien status. This provision also applies to all license applicants

Examples of secure and verifiable documentation include driver’s license, U.S. passport or green card. A complete list of the acceptable secure and verifiable documents can be found on the Professional Licensing Boards Division website at

Due to the large volume of documents that have been submitted, it is unlikely that all renewals will be completed prior to June 30. If a licensee submitted a renewal application on or before June 30, the license status should change to “active-renewal pending” while the staff awaits the submission of the required renewal documentation. “Active-renewal pending” does not mean the license has lapsed, is inactive or invalid. O.C.G.A. §50-13-18(b) states the following:

(b) When a licensee has made timely and sufficient application for the renewal of a license or for a new license with reference to any activity of a continuing nature, the existing license does not expire until the application has been finally determined by the agency and, in case the application is denied or the terms of the new license limited, until the last day for seeking review of the agency order or at a later date fixed by order of the reviewing court.

Please note all renewal documentation (for licensees who submitted a renewal application prior to the expiration date) must be submitted/postmarked by end of the late renewal period. Any documents received/postmarked after that date will not be reviewed, the license will be lapsed and the licensee will be required to complete the reinstatement process.
