Johns Creek Mayor Mike Bodker “absolutely” intends on running for re-election in the fall, despite being the center of an investigation launched by the city council to look into unspecified concerns of Bodker allegedly violating the city’s charter and ethics ordinance.

“Considering I don’t believe I’ve done anything to warrant such an investigation or that I violated any of the tenets that the citizens would expect of me, then [the investigation should not affect the election],” he said.

He thinks the cause of investigation may be politically motivated.

“It’s hard for me to draw any other conclusion given the limited information I have and the fact that it occurs in an election year,” Bodker said.

The city council hired Decatur law firm Wilson, Morton and Downs to handle the investigation at a cost of $185 an hour. City councilman Randall Johnson said council wanted a firm that was independent of the city, its elected officials and its employees.

Though the city’s communications manager, Rosemary Taylor, said the investigation is currently underway, Bodker said as of last Thursday, he had not been contacted by the law firm nor had any council member spoken to him regarding the investigation.

“Everything I’ve learned, I’ve learned through the media,” Bodker said.

Taylor said council has been advised by their attorneys not to comment about the ongoing investigation. A report will be made public once the investigation is completed. Depending on the results of the findings, city councilmembers will then decide on what next steps to take.

Taylor said the investigation could last about six weeks but council hopes it gets completed as soon as possible.
