Johns Creek Councilman Randall Johnson issued a statement to explain to the Johns Creek community why the city council voted to launch an investigation into certain unspecified actions of Mayor Mike Bodker. His letter to the editor is below:

To the Johns Creek Community:

Since our June 17 decision to launch an investigation of Mayor Bodker for city charter and ethics ordinance violations, members of the City Council have been asked many times, “Why are you doing this, and why now?”

Here’s why:

·Your City Council has a legal obligation to protect the ethical integrity of our city governance. Ignoring the Mayor’s actions would be sweeping those actions in question under the carpet. That is not something I will do, nor do I believe it’s what our community expects. The Council’s vote was 5-0 to move forward.

·I share your concern that the negative impression the investigation gives our wonderful city is regrettable, but the Mayor’s actions are the sole cause for this investigation. Therefore, this investigation is not a reflection of our city nor of our citizens, but of the Mayor himself, an investigation I certainly tried to avoid. To not act on information we believe to be true because it will taint our city would be irresponsible on our part.

·Despite repeated assurances from the Mayor that he would stop certain actions, he has not. The decision to conduct the investigation was not done hastily, or without deliberate thought.

·The Mayor’s public comments since June 17 amount to little more than distractions and obfuscations in an apparent attempt to cloud the serious issues at hand, thus leaving our community even more confused about what is going on.

·We have faith that a fair and thorough investigation will reveal the reasons for our actions with the justification and need for this review.

We ask for your continued patience and support as we work through this very difficult situation.
