In a news release, Theatre of the Stars Wednesday announced the Save Theater of the Stars campaign did not reach its Phase 1 goal of $500,000 by Friday, but the company is pursuing intermediary plans. According to its website, it raised $365,000 through Friday.

The fundraising efforts will continue and donations can be made by visiting or by calling (404) 252-8960.

To that end, the company has cancelled “Dreamgirls,” set for Aug. 2 through 11, due to a lack of funds. Theater of the Stars had already canceled “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” which was to take place July 9 through 14. It is in discussions with investors to support the production of “The Little Mermaid,” to take place Sept. 7 through 15. Theater of the Stars is reviewing its options regarding “Anything Goes,” Aug. 20 through 25.

Monday, The Fox Theatre in Midtown, where all 2013-14 Theatre of the Stars shows were to take place, terminated its lease with the company. Both parties agreed to move forward with an at-will usage arrangement. The termination of the lease allows The Fox to begin to fill the vacancies created by the cancellation of “Dreamgirls."

In a statement, Allan Vella, the Fox’s president and CEO, said, “The Fox Theatre has a long-standing relationship with Theater of the Stars. Recent events, however, have demonstrated that Theater of the Stars has been unable to fulfill the requirements of our lease agreement.”

Details will be released about “The Little Mermaid.” Information regarding the refund of single tickets for “Dreamgirls” can be found by visiting the Fox Theatre website at
