Brookhaven City Council delays rezoning ordinance

Brookhaven City Council continued to delay the rezoning ordinance for a controversial townhomes project off North Druid Hills Road.

Several residents who live near the proposed development expressed their concerns about the safety of the entrance to the project. And, about the cost for having the Residential South Partners LLC add 31 high-density homes.

“We know there is a problem,” Brookhaven resident Mary Novotny said. “There is a sign stating limited sight line there, and you could potentially cost the community more by approving this project.”

Residents said the current location’s entrance is on a bend in the road and gives them limited sight when turning left or right out of the entrance. In the current proposal there is no plan for changes to the entrance. Residents said they believe that with the rise in traffic both during and after construction, more accidents will occur at the site.

During the public hearing portion of the meeting, several residents said the monetary gains now may not be worth the tax dollars they will spend to find a solution to the entrance site in the future.

Julie Sellers, an attorney for the builder, was present and remained afterwards to speak with the neighbors. Sellers mentioned the builder is willing to work with residents to make the project succeed.

“We are waiting for some site elevation before rescheduling an additional meeting with the neighbors to address their concerns,” Sellers said.

Mayor J. Max Davis said he understood the concern of the citizens and asked for future meetings between the neighbors and the builder.

District 3 City Councilman Bates Mattison moved to defer the matter until Sept. 10 after the planning commission meets Aug. 7.
