The 2012 season was quite a journey for the Woodland-Henry volleyball team. Amazingly, the Lady Wolfpack won their first 28 contests en route to a 39-4 record and a trip to the Class AAAA Elite Eight.

“That was a pretty good record,” Woodland volleyball coach Gerri Wright said.

If the Lady Wolfpack have an encore performance of their very impressive and almost unreal start to last season in store, they will have to do it without key contributors Pam Konken (outside hitter), Nicole Findura (middle hitter) and Malika Gardner (middle hitter) who all graduated.

Konken, who was the first athlete to have her jersey retired at Woodland, is now a member of the Brenau Golden Tigers women’s volleyball team and Gardner plays volleyball for the Tennessee Temple Lady Crusaders.

The Lady Wolfpack lost a total of five seniors.

“We still have high expectations,” Wright said. “I expect us to go to the late rounds of state. We made it to the third round last year so I want to get to the semifinals this year.”

Southeast Whitfield stopped Woodland from reaching the 2012 Final Four.

Seniors Kaitlyn Hodges (libero) and Tierra Gardner (setter) and juniors Bria Rivers (setter) and Autumn DaCosta (outside hitter) are expected to help make this goal a reality.

“They just really want to do well,” Wright said. “There is a sense of wanting to do well and not just being here but wanting to succeed. That is a lot of it. We can have teams that just come out here and play but we have girls who come out here and want to win and that makes a big difference.”

The Lady Wolfpack also earned an 8-0 record in Area 4-AAAA last season.

“I think it will still be a positive, energetic team with good chemistry,” Wright said. “Everything from last year is going to carry over to this year.”
