The somewhat new-looking Lady War Eagles kicked off their 2013 season at Blessed Trinity against Johns Creek and the Lady Titans on Tuesday.
“I take the season in thirds,” Landmark coach Sherri Creamer said. “The first third of the season we are going to use those games to see where we need to improve. The middle part is us getting close to where we need to be and by the end of the season we should be in full swing.
“I tell the girls it’s like the locomotive that starts out kind of chugging and slow but that’s okay,” she said. “Then it builds momentum and that is what we want to do like we did last year.”
The Lady Eagles did just that in 2012, winning their first five games then not losing more than three in a row afterwards until they ended the season on a 15-game winning streak and snapped an eight-year title drought.
But Landmark will look a little different this season with major contributors Tiffany Creamer (outside hitter), Mary Michael McCathren (middle hitter), Kierstin Cusumano (middle) and Lilly Kessler (right side hitter) no longer in the picture.
Tiffany Creamer, McCathren and Cusumano all graduated, and Kessler will just play beach volleyball her senior year.
Freshman Cameron Dobbs will be the new outside hitter and looks very capable of picking up right where Tiffany Creamer left off.
“Cameron is a very accomplished, high-level player,” Sherri Creamer said. “She will be doing a lot for us.”
Also Becca Grady will play right side and junior Abby Johns will move from outside to middle hitter.
“There will be lots of change but once they get comfortable with it, I think they will do well,” Creamer said.
Seniors Ellen Anderson (setter), Savannah Wettstein (libero) and Chloe Garden (middle) are the three seniors and sophomore Jenny Luckie is back as starting libero.
“Jenny is phenomenal and will just keep getting better,” Creamer said.
Landmark will compete in the Holy Innocents-Marist State Finalist Playdate on Saturday.
