The chamber will host the program “Health Care Reform in 2014 and .... How Technology Can Help You Stay in Compliance!” during the Cobb EMC Power Breakfast Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 8 a.m. at the chamber office in Dallas. Bart Shaw, Randy Shaw, Parnick Jennings and Denise Wright, all of Cartersville-based employee insurance specialist ShawHankins, are set to speak during the event.
“This is quite possibly the most significant government regulatory act to affect businesses since minimum wage was instituted in 1938 and this seminar gives local business owners the chance to get firsthand professional advice on this very important topic,“ according to a Paulding Chamber email announcing the event.
The Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as health care reform or “Obamacare,” will affect each business differently, depending on the type and number of employees, the email stated. The seminar will explain the changes business owners can expect and help them begin planning for 2014.
Topics will include:
-Which employers are exempt from the employer mandate?
-How full-time employees are defined.
-How independent contractors, temporary workers and seasonal workers are treated under the Act.
-How to determine the 50-employee threshold.
-Who is eligible for the temporary small business tax credit?
-What technology is available to help navigate Affordable Care Act waters?
In addition, Jennings stated in an email the program will touch on such recent labor issues as:
-Section 7 rights under the National Labor Relations Act, which is enforced by the National Labor Relations Board. NLRA Section 7 rights guarantee employees the right to engage in concerted activities for mutual aid or protection of themselves against employers or for the mutual aid or protection of other employees
-Section 510 of the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act, which states: “It shall be unlawful for any person to discharge, fine, suspend, expel, discipline or discriminate against a participant or beneficiary for exercising any right to which he is entitled under the provisions of an employee benefit plan ... or for the purpose of interfering with the attainment of any right to which such participant may become entitled under the plan ..”
The Paulding Chamber is at 455 Jimmy Campbell Pkwy. (U.S. Hwy. 278) in Dallas.
Cost for the event, which includes a buffet breakfast, is $10 for Paulding Chamber members and $15 for non-members.
