In 2008, Decatur resident Amy Waggoner’s friend and business partner died from lung cancer. To honor her friend’s memory Waggoner committed to defeat the illness.

“I found out how bad it is and how little research is done so I began to look for ways to help,” Waggoner said. “This is my small way to make something positive out of a tragedy.”

After learning of her friend’s diagnosis she began to research and has since aligned with the Free to Breathe 5K event as a celebration of her friend to fight lung cancer. Waggoner said she was shocked when her friend was diagnosed because of how healthy she was.

After researching different cancer organizations, Waggoner decided to work with the National Lung Cancer Partnership, founder of the 5K run/walk series, since 82 percent of each dollar donated goes to research.

In the partnership, there are three basic programs. There is a research program, which works to find new and promising young scientists, an education program and a patient advocacy program to help patients receive the proper care.

The Free to Breathe 5K will be Saturday at John Howell Park in Atlanta to raise funds for more research. This is one of the many run/walk fundraisers the lung cancer organization puts on across the country.

The event is for all ages and is meant to serve as a celebration in the Virginia Highlands area. This is the fourth year for this particular event and the fundraising goal is $50,000.

If you go:
 When: Saturday, registration and check in start at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m.
 Where: John Howell Park, 869 Virginia Ave. in Atlanta
 Cost: $30
