Two months after their original concert was rained out, Gwen Hughes and The Retro Jazz Kats are hoping for sunny skies in their second performance Sunday at Heritage Sandy Springs’ Concerts by the Springs.

In its June 2 concert at Heritage Green, the band played two songs before a deluge cut it short. Hughes said the group does not want to disappoint the crowd in its rescheduled performance.

“We are super honored to have been asked back by Concerts by the Springs,” she said. “The band and I were truly sad when the rain came on so suddenly in June — the day had gotten sunny, the crowd was excited about our music, kids were dancing on the stage with us. It was just wonderful. I am hoping all that same energy will be there on Aug. 18 — plus bright sunshine — and we can get through the whole concert and give the audience what they missed in June. They hung out in the rain for over an hour then hoping we’d come back, but our equipment was just too wet to use. I feel we owe them an even better show now — and we will deliver.”

Heritage Executive Director Carol Thompson was equally optimistic.

“People were so disappointed when it rained because they played two numbers and had the crowd loving it and eating out of the palm of their hand,” she said. “We had so many [song] requests. Most of the crowd waited out an hour and a half. Everyone was so disappointed and wanted to reschedule it. Gwen wanted to play. She’s from Sandy Springs and wanted to please her hometown crowd. There was interest from both ends. … We were very excited to be able to find a date where they could play.”

The Jazz Kats, which includes three horns, a rhythm section and Hughes on vocals, plays jazz, swing, big band and other genres.

“When people ask for big band and swing music, this is the most economical way to give them that sound,” said Hughes. “But, we also do much more than that.”

Those attending Sunday’s show will get a taste of what their counterparts throughout Europe have been getting from Hughes and company.

“Just like there, people really want to hear classic jazz and then they want Stevie Wonder, Top 40 radio and Motown,” Hughes said. “We can do all that and we might do Cee Lo [Green], the Rolling Stones … and we take audience requests all the time.”

Gates for Sunday’s concert open at 5 p.m., with the main act set to hit the stage at 7 p.m. The series closes Sept. 8 with the Kinchafoonee Cowboys.
