I would like to thank Mr. Keith Watkins for his Letter to the Editor regarding Dick Yarbrough’s incessant attacks on Georgia Tech (“Yarbrough should stop attacks on Georgia Tech,” Aug. 7).
It must make Mr. Yarbrough feel like a really big man to constantly attack Tech while knowing that there is no reporter at the Neighbor Newspapers to provide a counterview. Yes, UGA consistently beats Tech on the football field. Apparently, in Mr. Yarbrough’s view, this must mean that UGA is a really great university.
He also tirelessly reminds us that UGA has more Rhodes Scholars than Tech. Big surprise given that Tech is an engineering and technical university. Let’s look at an even more exclusive academic achievement. How many UGA graduates have been astronauts? Answer: zero. How many Tech graduates have been astronauts? Answer: 14. Which is the more difficult and exclusive achievement?
So go ahead Mr. Yarbrough and attack Tech for not being the football factory that UGA is, but when it comes to academic achievement, UGA is on the very short end of the stick. It would take a truly big man to admit that.
