The fundraiser features about 40 businesses, civic organizations, nonprofits, churches and other groups offering up about 140 to 160 different samples of homemade ice cream, said Kathy Swahn, executive director at The Drake House. Proceeds from the event benefit the organization’s programs which provide short-term crisis housing, support, education and empowerment to homeless mothers and their children in north metro Atlanta. Swahn said the goal is to raise $50,000, while spreading awareness about the nonprofit.
“We always like the fact that [community members] can learn more about The Drake House and the work that we do to serve the families here in the north Fulton community,” she said. “That’s always our goal … to reach out to more and more people that would understand our mission and support our mission.”
The ice cream fundraiser — and the organization itself — is named after Mary Drake, who dedicated her life to improving the lives of those less fortunate in the Roswell community. In addition to sampling dozens of ice cream choices, the event will include live music, sno-cones and popcorn, an ice cream eating contest, an ice cream stacking contest and children’s activities. “I think the fact that it’s a family event that brings the whole community together is probably the best thing about the event,” Swahn said.
Guest judges will give accolades to the groups who create the best flavors from four categories: chocolate-based, vanilla-based, fruit and specialty.
For $6 — or $20 for a family of six — event goers can sample all their stomachs allow. They get a spoon and cup at the entrance and have two hours to visit the different makeshift ice cream shops.
Swahn said they are able to keep the prices low due to contributions from about a dozen sponsors.
“Most of the money that we make, we make in sponsorships,” she said. “We want to keep the price affordable for the families to come in and eat.”
DataScan is the event’s presenting sponsor and others include Coldwell Banker, Roswell Presbyterian Church and Verizon Wireless.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate or in advance at The Drake Closet at 825 Mimosa Blvd. in Roswell.
