After finishing with a 1-9 record last year, the Lithia Springs football program has gone back to fundamentals both on and off the field to produce a better outcome in the upcoming season.

Head coach Scott Dean said the team has been doing some “old school drills” which includes flipping tires, dragging and carrying logs and running up hills with weights.

“We’re really taking a fundamental approach to getting back into shape…Our goal is to make sure we’re the best conditioned team we could possibly be,” Dean said.

Having a “pretty good” summer, according to Dean, the Lions participated in an Auburn University camp as well as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.

Focusing on character and leadership this summer as well, Dean said the FCA camp really helped.

Along with conditioning and leadership, Dean stressed the importance of his team staying injury-free and academically eligible. A number of team members lost playing time last season, putting them in a tight spot as they already struggled with depth.

“We certainly have to stay healthy, stay out of trouble in the school building and work harder as a team. These things will directly impact the season,” he said.

Returning to the team for the 2013 season are six starters on both sides of the ball.

After not playing for the team last season, senior Kyle Brinkley has been fighting for the starting quarterback position, but after starting seven games last season, junior Tikal Petty may have the nod for the position.
