Once again, high school football is ready to take center stage.

Indeed, it is showtime for the area’s gridiron squads as they take the field beginning Friday for the 2013 season.

A number of teams will try to repeat their success of a year ago.

St. Pius X is coming off a runner-up finish in Class AAA, while Marist advanced to the AAAA semifinals and Lovett made it to the AA quarterfinals.

Westminster will try to get back to the postseason after advancing to the second round in AA and Holy Innocents’ attempts to improve on last year’s performance in the Class A private school playoffs, where it lost in the first round.

Riverwood looks to build on the promise it showed last year and earn its first state playoff berth since 2001 after winning its first five games for the first time since ’86 and barely missing out on a AAAAA postseason spot.

Several squads will simply attempt to improve their fortunes and get on the winning track after disappointing seasons.

North Springs will try to break a 33-game losing streak under new coach Steve Horton, while new coaches at Pace (Chris Slade) and Mount Vernon Presbyterian (Ryan Zimmerman) will attempt to turn around the fortunes of those programs.

Meanwhile, North Atlanta continues its quest to improve under second-year coach Doug Britten.

Holy Spirit Prep will try to advance further in the Glory For Christ league playoffs after losing in the first round a year ago.

So, the show is about to begin as another exciting year of high school football beckons.
