The vehicle, sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Workforce Board, is equipped with computer stations, Internet access, printers, scanners and other technology.
The career lab began making its rounds in 2007 to local military bases facing closure, like Fort Gillem in Forest Park, to help soldiers and other military personnel relocate and find new jobs.
Now the mobile unit is helping city residents with building resumes, job searching online and participating in local job fairs.
Audrey LeGrand, career coach for the lab and author of the book “How to Get Out of Job Jail,” said many citizens need help with basic job-hunting skills.
“I speak with many people who are looking for a career and I tell them that if they’re not having any luck, it’s either their resume or interview skills that are lacking, so we work with and help them in those areas,” she said.
LeGrand says some residents have come back to express their gratitude and success after using the lab’s services.
“One young woman told me she got four interviews lined up the day after posting her new and improved resume to the web,” she said.
Along with operator and mentor Samuel White, LeGrand has been helping citizens find jobs with the mobile unit for two years in Stockbridge, where patrons can enter the vehicle from the lower parking level of the library starting at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
The rolling career center also travels to libraries in Clayton and Fayette counties, White said.
LeGrand and White say the response from the community has been “positive” and residents are appreciative of the resources provided to those who may not otherwise be able to take advantage of technology.
“We’re pleased with the results so far and coordinating with local libraries definitely helps us help others,” White said.
Both LeGrand and White encouraged residents who are currently looking for jobs to also visit the Atlanta Regional Workforce Board website at www.atlantaregional.com/workforce and the Department of Labor’s website at www.dol.state.ga.us for useful tips and valuable information.
