First-year head coach Telicia Leonard will lead the varsity team while first-year head coach Ada Franklin is leading the JV.
Leonard began teaching at Lithia Springs in February and became the head coach for the volleyball team over the summer when the position became available. Leonard has been the head coach of two other programs. She began in 2004 at Shaw High in Columbus before moving to Osborne in Marietta for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
With only two returning players from last season, the team is off to a late start as the varsity just played their first games on Sept. 3 when they hosted Hiram and Woodland.
Lithia Springs had a match scheduled for late August but canceled it because tryouts were still under way and the players were still getting physicals. The team was not yet prepared to play, according to Leonard.
“Tryouts went really well. We had a lot of interest. Some of the girls have a lot of experience, but mostly JV. We’re continuing to build on fundamentals for these JV players,” said Leonard.
With seven players on the varsity team – two seniors, three juniors and two sophomores – twins Anaiah and Amariah Boyer are the leaders of the team as the seniors and are doing a great job, according to Leonard.
“They’re really great leaders for the program. They’re really looking to continue the legacy they were grown into and grooming the more novice players into it as well,” Leonard said.
Now the team is ready to really get their season going and, with that, Leonard believes the girls are all looking toward one common goal.
“They’re looking forward to having an enjoyable and successful season. The ultimate goal is to pursue a championship and they’re working hard towards that goal,” Leonard said.
