When her first daughter was 4 months old, Gravett took her on vacation but was frustrated from carrying so many products around and still not having the right cover to shield her baby from the sun without making her too hot.
She dreamed up the product to solve her problem. It comes with links that universally fit all strollers, car seats and carriers so mothers don’t have to carry a different cover for each. The product also comes with an adjustable and fully detachable neck strap to use as a safe nursing cover.
“[Other nursing wraps] have a plastic band around the neckline that serves the purpose of allowing you to look down and see your child while nursing,” she said. “The problem with it is that if you are sitting down, people who are walking behind you can look over you and look down as well. [The PunkinWrap doesn’t] have that plastic component that stays open when you’re nursing.”
Bringing the product from vision to an actual retail item was “a huge process,” Gravett said. Having never sewn prior, she took a sewing class and then came up with a prototype. She worked with an attorney to patent the product and with an office of the U.S. Small Business Administration at Kennesaw State University to develop her business plans. Next she had to select manufacturers to produce the wrap and the plastic links.
Gravett’s daughter Brynn — nicknamed Punkin — was the inspiration for the product and is now 2.5 years old. The newest addition to the family, 9-week-old Arden, was born the day after the product launched, she said.
Gravett said the early response to the product has been wonderful.
“I think I’m most excited about the response that I’ve received from mothers,” she said. “Hearing from them that the product is helpful is really great.”
She has been pleasantly surprised at the number of shoppers purchasing the product as gifts. About 90 percent of online sales have been for gifts, she said.
Locally, The Ant Farm at 408 S. Atlanta Street in Roswell sells the product, Gravett said. Shoppers can also purchase the product at New Baby Products on Cheshire Bridge Road in Atlanta or online at www.punkinwrap.com.
