Brookhaven council approves zoning for North Druid Hills townhomes

New townhomes will surface at the old North Atlanta Bible Church property on North Druid Hills Road.

Last week, the Brookhaven City Council voted unanimously for the property to be rezoned for 28 new townhomes.

More than 20 residents appeared at the meeting both in support and opposition for the project. Residents against the project spoke during the public hearing and their concerns about density, traffic and home values remained the same from the Aug. 7 Brookhaven Planning Commission meeting.

“The city of Brookhaven was incorporated in part due to the frustrations of our citizens, due to the county government not being responsive to our voices,” Brookhaven resident Andrew Kass said. “Ironically, the first zoning case, from an outside developer, is zoning inherited from DeKalb County.”

Brookhaven resident Jon Margolis said he did not want the council to approve the townhomes since the developer is only accommodating the neighbors to the south side of the property.

“It is not fair that the residents from the south side of the property gets an agreement with the developer after threatening a lawsuit,” Margolis said. “The plans for the project need to be redone to accommodate both the north and south needs.”

Brookhaven resident Tim Gartland was one of two residents who spoke for the townhomes and he said he would prefer the property be turned into a greenspace, but he approves the project after working with the developer.

The council approved the project after requiring more than 20 conditions including decreasing the number of homes from 31 to 28, traffic and garbage pick-up.

“There are lots of conditions,” District 3 Councilman Bates Mattison said. “All these conditions are a result between the developer, homeowners and community. These conditions are a considerable accommodation for the affected property owners.”
