In only her second-ever meet as a varsity runner, Centennial freshman cross country athlete Maddie Peterson finished third at the Fulton County Championships in Milton, Ga. on Sept. 21. Her time of 20:58.10 was the best time for a Centennial runner, helping the Knights win the Girls’ team competition, finishing ahead of second-place Roswell and third-place Northview.

“Maddie has become the fastest freshman runner that we’ve ever had at Centennial,” head coach Robert White said. “She’s very competitive and has performed at a very high level despite having little experience.”

The team win was the second for Centennial who also won the Lambert Invitational earlier this season. “Fulton County allows let us compete with our neighboring schools such as Milton and Roswell,” White said. “It was a chance to against them in a meet that is similar to the size of our region meet and nice to finally beat them.”

Centennial won the Region 6-AAAAAA championship last season and placed 13th in the state. This season, the Knights are currently ranked seventh in its class.

“I’m fortunate to have a great group of leaders on this team,” White said. “We have worked hard all summer and look forward to finishing the year strong.”

Peterson and the rest of the Knights will return to action this weekend at the Great American Cross Country Invitational in Cary, N.C.
