“To me, October is no more special than any other month,” he said. “People that have breast cancer, they have it all year long. They’re suffering through it if it’s May, if it’s January.”
Khalaj owns RK & Co. Jewelers in Alpharetta and donates a portion of his sales every day to the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund and Northside Hospital’s breast care program.
“We donate 3 percent of every piece of jewelry that we sell to Northside and NBCC, half and half,” he said. “If we sell a diamond, 1 percent gets divided between the two organizations.”
Breast cancer awareness is near and dear to him because his mother died from the illness in 2009. When he opened his business in 2010, he wanted to do something to help breast cancer patients.
The motto of Khalaj’s business is “a fine jewelry store with a purpose.” A pink ribbon for breast cancer replaces the ampersand in the store’s logo.
Khalaj said he chose to donate to Northside Hospital because that is where his mother received her care.
“We approached Northside before we opened and we told them that we wanted to donate to their breast care program,” he said. “It is our way of giving back. They did the best that they could for her … and I’m appreciative and will always be.”
He also chose to give to the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund because he liked that the organization set a deadline to find a cure to breast cancer.
“If there’s no goal, how do you get rid of this thing?” he asked. “Their goal is to find a cure by Jan. 1, 2020, and I just hope that they do.”
In the three years he has operated RK & Co. Jewelers, Khalaj said his business has donated about $20,000 in products and cash to both groups.
