Local lodging entities are doing brisk business, comparing favorably to other metro area destinations.
“We’re still holding our own. … That’s a good thing,” said Kym Hughes, executive director of the Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism Board at its meeting Thursday at the Sandy Springs Welcome Center.
The most up-to-date statistics — as of August — were unveiled at the meeting.
Sandy Springs’ nightly occupancy rate of 72.7 percent is tops among its metro neighbors: Atlanta posted 63.6 percent; Cobb County 60.1; DeKalb County 66.7 and Gwinnett County 66.2.
Sandy Springs’ average August room rate of $80.90 per day was second only to Atlanta’s $86.91. By comparison, the state average is $83.12.
Hospitality and tourism officials are also bracing for the impact of a new Homewood Suites by Hilton extended stay hotel, set to open beside the Hyatt Place at Perimeter Center in December 2014.
“They’re just going to pull business from the extended stays that are already there, so we have to figure out what might be a good fit for the other extended stays, see where the business is and where we might be able to help them market to pick up [the slack],” Hughes said. “For us, sadly the truth is, ‘Okay, who’s renovating?’ … because then they’re going to take the other part of that market share. And then the ones that aren’t renovating, they’re the ones who are going to have to look for that other business.”
Officials are also probing the presence of food trucks within city limits.
Mayor Eva Galambos said the mobile food vendors could potentially be “huge” competition for the city’s restaurants.
“Before it gets too far down the line, [food truck vendors] need to come to the city [for vetting] … there are already plenty of places to eat here,” Galambos said.
