Langston Hughes senior running back Keion Davis has covered a good amount of ground on his road to 2,000 yards.

“I’m trying to get my jersey retired,” said Davis when asked about this declaration.

After five games, Davis has rushed for 761 yards on 90 carries, 8.46 yards per carry average, and 10 touchdowns for the 4-1 Panthers.

Davis credits his numbers to the approach he has during afternoons from Monday through Thursday.

“We practice so fast at practice,” he said. “It’s ridiculous. I’m like I can’t be lazy. Everything I do must be fast. If it isn’t fast, we need to start over because it’s not good enough.”

Davis has eclipsed the 200-yard rushing mark twice already and been held under 100 yards just once.

“Rockdale County put nine in the box,” Davis said. “They were like 18 can’t beat us. But what it did was open up things for everyone else. I didn’t mind as long as we won. I’d rather have two yards with a win instead of having 200 and we lose.”

Up next for Davis and the Panthers is Douglas County at home.

After the season and graduation, Davis plans to continue playing football at Marshall.

“Marshall put their neck on the line for me early,” Davis said. “They realized my talent early on so I might as well return the favor.”
