Each week, the Douglas County Animal Shelter highlights a cat and a dog as the Pets of the Week. All animals at the Shelter are looking for loving and permanent homes, and it is hoped that the Pets of the Week highlight will help bring attention to all of the animals currently housed at the Douglas County Animal Shelter.

Kate, No. 9261, is a black female domestic short-hair cat. She is a quiet, well-mannered adult but enjoys a catnip toy to bat about.

Clint, No. 9513, is a male German shepherd. He greets shelter staff with a hearty handshake and is very well-mannered.

There are 121 cats and 77 dogs, a ferret and a goat at the shelter, and the shelter is overcrowded. Some of the animals have already been spayed or neutered. All adoptable animals are listed on

Cats available for adoption include domestic short hair, domestic medium hair and domestic long hair varieties, as well as two Russian blue kittens. Most of the cats are very sweet, get along with other cats, and are litter box trained.

Dogs include pit bulls, pit bull mixes, Shepherd mixes, a purebred German shepherd, Labrador Rrtriever mixes, Australian shepherd mixes, Chihuahua mixes, Shih Tzu, poodle mixes, Shar Pei mixes, terrier mixes, pug mixes and more. Many of the dogs know simple commands, are very loving, seem to get along well with other dogs and are somewhat house-trained.

The shelter is open Tuesday through Sunday afternoons, and is located at 1755 County Services Road, off Cedar Mountain Road, adjacent to the Cedar Mountain Landfill about 4.5 miles northwest of downtown Douglasville.
