Shayaa Yusef Forbes, 32, of North Springs Drive was being held in the Paulding County Detention Center without bond today. He is charged in the death of the boy, who area news outlets have identified as his son, McClure Middle School sixth-grader Eric Forbes.
Forbes was arrested after Paulding County sheriff's deputies responded to the residence in response to a 911 call about a drowning, Henson said. Upon arrival, deputies and EMS personnel found the12-year-old boy unconscious. He was subsequently transported to Paulding Wellstar Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Deputies on the scene called in detectives with the Crimes Against Children Division to investigate. The boy, who had multiple bruises, bite marks, lacerations and other marks consistent with physical abuse, appeared to have endured abuse for quite some time, Henson said.
Detectives, working with agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, interviewed, arrested and charged Forbes the evening of the incident with cruelty to children, a felony. The GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta performed an autopsy over the weekend, and once the results of the autopsy are returned more charges are likely, Henson said.
A female juvenile also lived in the residence with Forbes. The female juvenile is now in the custody with the state Department of Family and Children Services, Henson said.
Detectives were continuing their investigation into this case and are urging anyone that has information about the Forbes case to call them at (770) 445-6105, Henson said.
